Rev. Fr. Francis Pullukattu has been appointed as the first Chaplain for the community in January 2016 through the consistent efforts of Eparchial Bishop Mar Bosco Puthur, under the generous sponsorship of the Diocese of Parramatta.

The community has adopted the name "Saint Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Community" subsequent to canonization of St Alphonsa in October 2008.

The Diocese of Parramatta has allocated St. Michael’s Parish, Blacktown in June 2016 for the community. Since 03 July 2016, Holy Mass is celebrated in Malayalam at St. Michael’s Parish, Orwell Street Blacktown.

Saint Thomas the Apostle

St. Thomas was born a Jew and was called to be one of the twelve Apostles. His birth and death dates are unknown, but his feast day is celebrated July 3. He lived before the formal establishment of the Catholic Church but is recognized as the patron saint of architects.

Prayer to Saint Thomas the Apostle

Dear Saint Thomas, You were once slow in believing that Christ had gloriously risen; but later, because you had seen him, you exclaimed: "My Lord and my God!" According to an ancient story, you rendered most powerful assistance for constructing a church in a place where pagan priests opposed it. Please bless architects, builds and carpenters that through them the Lord may be honored. Amen

Syro-Malabar Church in Australia

Syro Malabar Eparchy of Saint Thomas the Apostle

Melbourne, Australia

On 23 December 2013 Holy Father Francis established “The Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne” and appointed Bishop Bosco Puthur as the first Bishop for the emerging skilled migrant communities of Syro-Malabar origin in Australia. St Alphonsa Syro- Malabar Mission in Parramatta caters this heritage of the migrants of Syro-Malabar origin.

Syro-Malabar Catholic Church

The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to the St. Thomas. It is one of the 22 Eastern (Oriental) Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church after the Ukrainian Church, with 4.6 million believers. It is a sui juris church in full communion with the Pope and the worldwide Catholic Church, headed by Major Archbishop Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, with self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches.

St Thomas the Apostle came down to India in 52 AD. He kindled there the light of the Gospel of Jesus, founded seven Christian communities, and was martyred in A.D. 72 at Mylapore, in South India. Hence the early Christian community in India was formerly known by the name, “St. Thomas Christians.”

The Syro-Malabar Church uses the Liturgy of Saints Mar Addai and Mar Mari belonging to the East Syriac Rite, which dates back to 3rd century Edessa, as such it is a part of Syriac and Hebraic  by language and heritage. The name Syro-Malabar is coined from the words Syriac (referring to the East Syriac liturgy and language) and Malabar (the historical name for Kerala).
